gingerjohn's Top 10's of 09
a preetty sharp year too, but as is always said, next year will be better!
and for DARK PARTY it will be, expect more guests, DARK PARTY Radio, DARK PARTY TV, more give aways, etc
really looking forward to where this beast takes us
thanks again ever so for the support, and your time spent reading, come out, listening to all the stupid stuff we do
so heres my top 10 singles, and top 10 albums of 2009
Top 10 singles
Metric – gimme sympathy
This band never gets old, theres just something about her voice that carries it off
Major Lazer – Pon De Floor
Wasn’t really into this the first time I heard it, must say it’s a grower, and a MASSIVE tune, that’s pretty much changing music right now
MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker
There was blog hype on this track about a million years ago, but it was officially released this year, and I love it, it’s a beaut
Local Natives – Camera Talk
Been on these for ages, see previous blog, the song just makes me wanna harmonies all the chorus bits
Two Door Cinema Club – Something Good Can Work
This years cheer up tune, you can’t help but smile and dance to this
Telekinesis – Coast of Carolina
First thing I ever heard of theirs, and I fell in love, don’t know why, just did. Nice american esk, real warm sound
A Place To Bury Strangers – in your heart
Liked the first album, nearly cried when I heard the second, talk about stamping and closing the genre shut tight, fuck the horrors this is the shit!
Man Like Me – London Town
All ways will be a fav band for me, just so much fun, and this song was what lead to them playing DARK PARTY
Crystal Fighters – Xtatic Truth
The most epic song of the year in my eyes and ears, such a builder, “learning how to stand alone”
Music Go Music – Just Me
Stupidly late entry but just got in, don’t know why I love this song, oh yer I do, its cos it’s like if abba and tilly and the wall had a love child! Imagine how happy the world would be….even though this song is about breaking up, at least they put a nice spin on it
Top 10 Albums

Future of the Left Travels With Myself and Another
royal bangs - let it beep

BoaBoa's 2009
A good year, a weird year, whatever. Here are my favourite bits...
Favourite Tunes:
Crazy Cousinz - Inflation
Released late on in 2008 (great way to start the list, total rule breaker, but whatever) but was included in more or less every set i have played in 2009, its simply massive and really opened up my eyes to UK Funky as a serious genre.
Santiago & Bushido - Can't Be Wrong
The vocals on this tune are fantastic. It was a really nice, refreshing approach from S&B, who haven't jumped on the back of this new sounding house music like everyone else. It shows that just by stripping down your own sound, you can still create music that makes the crowd bust-it, without relying on a huge wobbly bassline.
The Juan MacLean - Happy House
12 minutes of quite possibly the most feel good music of the year. An absolutely huge piano drop, and chipper vocals that would bring a smile to even the most focused pill muncher in the club.
Renaissance Man - What Is Guru
In a year that house music went crazy over ethnic samples, Renaissance Man bent every other artist over, and smashed the shit out of them with this tune. Haaaaarrrrrreeeeeeee Krrrriiiiiisssssshhhhhiiiiiinnnnnaaaaaaaaa!
&ME - F.I.R
A tune that reminds me of playing 5 hour sets at On&On in Bournemouth with Crack Your Skull. A haunting, looping vocal over some bleepy goodness, and atmospheric sounding shit. A tune that stays in your head for a very long time, which isn't a bad thing.
Delphic - Counterpoint
Delphic are my second favourite new band of 2009. I think i've seen them three times, and in pretty crap circumstances (twice at festivals, once at a club night), but every time they got better and better. Its a sound that reminds me a bit of The Cooper Temple Clause, nice electronics and huge build-up's that make you feel like you're going to explode.
Florence & The Machine - You've Got The Love (XX Remix)
Remix of the year, EASILY. Surprisingly im quite a fan of the Flozzer version anyway, but this remix just smashes it. Pure UK garage feel that reminds me of underage club nights and EZ CDs. you know any dance tune that has a chopped up harp loop in it is going to be a winner. I genuinely shocked this hasn't wriggled its way out of the underground and all over daytime Radio 1.
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Reminds me of my mate Sully. So refreshing to hear Dubstep that doesn't sound like a chain-saw trying to cut through an angle grinder. Again, it has a big UK Garage, and even a Deep House feel. Nice two-stepper that still works at peak time.
Silvio Ecomo, Chuckie - Moombah (Afrojack Mix)
European Electro House is jokes, a proper Love/ Hate relationship, but this is plain and simple jump-up, squeaky, bassy nonsense that makes me want to punch the roof and grab the person next to me and shake them violently.
Justin Martin, Claude VonStroke - Beat That Bird
Massive jackin' number, with a rib-cage-rattling drop at the end, which more or less comes out of nowhere, like a happy slap. NERRRRRRRRRR-WHOOP WEEP WHOOP WEEP WHOP WEEP WHOOP WEEP, NEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRR etc.
Zombie Disco Squad - Eurovision
This tune has got "Set opener" written all over it. A baltimore-esq, horn blowing, organ pounding, carnival bonanza. Pure party music, which more or less kick started my obsession (along with the Crazy Cousinz track mentioned earlier) with african percussion. Such a big tune.
Oliver $ - Watcha gonna do
808 bomb. Totally massive. Huge build up, and a drop that I'm sure could make the right person combust. The whispered vocal and constant sub-bass make this make for a mysterious and subtle tune. A fresh new outlook for Oliver $, and nestling its way into becoming a Made To Play classic.
Favourite Albums:
Major Lazer - Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do
Jack Penate - Everything Is New
Jesse Rose - What Do You Do If You Dont?
XX - XX
Anthony and the Johnsons - Crying Light
The Get Up Kids - Something To Write Home About (I'm allowed, it got re-released!)
Japandroids - Post nothing

2 Door Cinema Club
i was sent one of their singles a while back, and it was probably my song of the moment for ages, lets face it, it was, its great, " Something Good Can Work" is just a fun jumpy little thing that makes you wanna smile and dance, bringing warmth into your life as the weather gets colder
on the cusp of releasing the next single "I Can Talk" also on "Kitsuné" these guys need more hype and excitement around them. just a great fun time band

Bang Bang Eche
this bunch of crazy nippers(not as young as they look, honest!) come from NZ, the place of well...not much but lovely lamb and lord of the rings...well they did inform me that the local beer/ale/cider scene is pretty big in christchurch
after hearing about these guys due to playing with the likes of enter shikari, i wasn't to sure on what their sound would be, but if I'm honest, i wasn't really expecting much. luckily my ignorance was proven wrong, these guys are great, playing to round 50 people and loving every second. its nice to see when bands vibe off crowds and these lot are mainly fueled by the crowd. while over in the US doing showcases they explained that its so hard to "perform" with a bunch of people with arms folded and only nodding their heads.
bringing a sound and energy thats been missing since test icicles, these guys are loud, fun, electronic, party and much more! i expect alot from these, and you'll defo hear more from them soon, check them out

Royal Bangs Return
Royal Bangs return, they come back with their second album "Let It Beep" on AUDIO EAGLE (US) / CITY SLANG (EU). theres just something about this band/record thats fun but incredibly haunting i cant put my finger on it, but the track that sums up the album for me is "My Car Is Haunted", it has the same ability to cripple me and make me wanna move like an idiot at the same time
this band is stupidly underrated only being able to play 1 UK date on this tour, i pray they dont take that the wrong way...

Local Natives
a friend of mine told me about these guys nearly a year back after some time in America. They were good then, but now...they're great! they've got a great team behind them now, including management and Booker's, they'll be big i reckon whether you like it or not
This track, is a sneaky peak into Local Natives pop ability, its not up on their myspazz or nout, great little tune

She Dont Wanna Man
so i'm not a fan of ASHER ROTH, but i've missed CHROMEO, and this Yes Giantess mix of this track stinks of them! Cheesy synth riffs that should of been left on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and one of the most epic 70s/80s electro funk outros
ASHER ROTH - She Don't Wanna Man(Yes Gaintess Remix)
Then, there is also the issue, of the other mix of this by Fenech - Soler , and it sounds so fucking french it hurts! great mix, great texture in sound, crossing minimal and that 70s/80s disco feel

The most Terrifying Music Genre The World Has Ever Seen
Some people will break both their arms and continue dancing all night as if nothing has happened. Also, numerous cases have been reported of people dancing so fast that their heart gives in and they drop dead on the dancefloor.
Lil Wayne - "A Milli (Ryszard Kuklinski remix)
At one rave at the end of last year, when the above song was pitched up to +16, three people dropped dead before the track had finished.

Show Me Love
No matter who you are or where you are when this gets played you look at you mate and utter the words 'tune'. Robin S's 1993 classic 'Show Me Love' was reworked to huge applaud last year by house dons Steve Angello and Laidback Luke. They mashed it together with their hit 'Be'. And destroyed every dance floor last summer. it is coming up for re release and a repeat performance this summer and is defiantly going to be a house anthem for a whole new generation.
Check out these little reworked diddys.

come on really, how hard is it to programme 24 hours of music a day? i know people, including myself that would do it for fun
the other evening, i turned it on and who did i see, fucking bono, on MTV2 the music alternative. i can't believe how some people kicked up about "bonkers" being on there, but can stomach this? i know alot of people gave up on MTV2 when it got rid of 120minutes, but i thought i'd give it some more chances, but now, i'll just stick to youtube

Future Of The Left
this is my first post so be gentle...
one of my favourite bands died, and then 2 of my favourite bands decided to make this band Future Of The Left
having taking ages, and only palming us off with a live album, the new studio album has been longingly waited for, "Travels With Myself And Another" is said album
having been a massive fan boy of mclusky, i really do enjoy this band, for catchy music and witty lyrics, this album delivers. with probably stronger songs than from the first
songs such as "I Am Civil Service", "Throwing Bricks At Trains" and "Drink Nike" bring that horrible off key sing along quality that you expect and know from these guys, and the new single is already all over MTV2
the album is out on 22nd June
