Right, you know i'm not the scene's biggest fan, but this Scion A/V Presents is awesome, and really re affirming that the genre hasn't sold out and gone all bass culture Skream & Benga (Scion AV) by ScionAV
I was doing some DIY with my housemate Chris the other week, and I popped on the XX album. We were both talking about those albums that you listened to non-stop for a period of time, and when you listen to them again you get that sentimental feeling, you know? The power of music. Along with Burial "Untrue" and a select few more, the first XX record is definitely one for me, and always will be. I was certain that there would never be another XX record, but I was proved wrong when this little ditty that surfaced on Christmas Day.
Haters are gon' hate, but we'll soon find out what it will be like. Though it wont sound anything like this, it's just nice to hear some new material again.
Really don't know whats happening to me of late, or if dubstep based music is getting better, but really into this mix of the new A-Trak & Zinc track by Benga, check it out
There's probably more people out there that will hate this than like it, but i think its a great idea, and makes you look at Peaches in a greater light... the girl can sing
This is a reworking of some songs from the legendary Casablanca Records catalogue. With Gomma, Moullinex, Telonius, Munk and The Phenomenal Handclap Band they've done four new interpretations of classic tracks by Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder, Skatt Brothers, Stephanie Mills and from the Flashdance soundtrack
It's that time again. Top 10 lists are everywhere, so it's probably time for me to jump on the festive bandwagon and bang out my personal favourite things of the year, mostly tunes that have been going down well when I've been playing out. So, whilst Loose Women shout their heads off on the telly, I'm going to sum up my year in one blog post. Top 10 tunes:
10) Blawan - Getting Me Down
While RnB samples become cooler and more ironic than an episode of "Dalston Superstars" Blawan proves that when you get a good one (in this case, Brandy) and accompany it with some ERRATIC percussion, you're onto a winner. Proof that you can pull up house music and not look like a fool.
9) Scuba - Adrenalin
A late entry, but when you get lost in the trance breakdown that lasts about half the duration of the tune, you'll know why it's on the list.
8) Luca Lozano - Thug It Out (KWS)
Luca Lozano of Zombie Disco Squad fame gets the Kris Wadsworth treatment, and the outcome speaks for itself. A downtempo juggernaut with more whomps than the Skrillex album. Klasse Recordings is also easily my favourite label of 2011.
7) Eats Everything - Heard That
Attack of the RnB samples 2: Revenge of the RnB, one of the best in my opinion which is probably why I'm so into this big one from new alias man, Eats Everything. The second drop on this is catastrophic. Pets Recordings aren't too bad either.
6) Zoo Look - Holdin' On
When your mates are releasing shit like this, it's madness.
5) Wadsworth - Lime & Pink
Kris Wadsworth doing it again. Another chugger, more whomps, more foot stomping, MORE ENERGY.
4) Steffi - Yours
It's been posted before, but I'll post it again. This tune is amazing, weird, scary/ all the above. At my one and only Panorama Bar experience this was dropped and felt extra special. Great tune.
3) Casino Times - That's The Truth
Another chums tune. It's been an awesome year for these guys with debut EPs, Berlin shows and arguably THE biggest underground tune of 2011. And guess what? ANOTHER RnB sample! OHHHHH NO!
2) Coat Of Arms - Is This Something
Absolute BOMB. Proper jackin' bouncy house business from the Bristol boys who have released gem after gem this year and have a real definitive sound, as does the next guy...
1) Julio Bashmore - Battle For Middle You
Goosebumps every time. I'll never forget the first time I heard this... Jesse Rose played a "secret" show, before his slot at Counter Culture, where he dropped it AGAIN. I was hooked. It came out at the beginning of the year, and has been doing it ever since, and will do well into 2012. Recent highlight: Greymatter letting it loose at Tief at Corsica Studios. Other highlights: Azari & III at Glastonbury Glastonbury The Streets at Brixton Academy Plastikman at Brixton Academy Berlin Klasse Recordings New Cross Panorama Bar The Black Heart Queuing for Berghain Infographics Camden Magculture POW! Dark Party Zombie Beach Party BoaBoa b2b Fazhands Luke Million - Arnold (MORE ENERGY) The Creative Review Blog Tiga at XOYO The new Surfer Blood EP Thew new November Coming Fire demo Bloomberg Businessweek Tief at Corsica Studios Room 2 in Corsica Studios Zoo Look Towers (RIP) Lot's of stuff I forgot...
In the current shit storm of "dance" music (mainly the horrid UKF or whatever its called), its nice that some more mainstreamy bits are coming through, this is great from Zinc. Bet the kids would shit their pants if they realised he's probably older than their dad
In my eyes The Knockouts are the best band in Luton's history of bands all time. That is no sutlbe title, or a joke, they're genuinely awesome. Its like having your very own surf garage scene all tied up in one band. They've just released a new sampler via amazon, CLICK HERE, called "You're Breaking My Hands" it's the best £3.99 you will ever spend
They also took part in this short film, about Luton. It's not really a "short" film, but its a funny take on our home
So excited for White Hinterland to be over touring with Little Dragon! Kairos is such a stunning album
November 27 Manchester, UK - Ruby Lounge w/Little Dragon November 29 Dublin, Ireland - Button Factory w/Little Dragon November 30 Glasgow, UK - Arches w/Little Dragon December 2 Bristol, UK - Thekla w/Little Dragon December 3 Brighton, UK - Concorde 2 w/Little Dragon December 4 London, UK - Shepherds Bush Empire w/Little Dragon December 6 London, UK - White Heat @ Madame JoJo's (headline show)
This just turned up in my inbox, its been floating around the internet for ages, but its still a tune, and it helped me remember that Phi Life Cypher are playing at The Pad in Bedford in December, here the LINK
been waiting for this for what feels like forever! The Golden Filter return, with this down tempo edged sound, that still holds that dark crispness you'd expect from them
we were pretty pumped to announce that we were doing an all nighter, now that we've added our fave's I.R.O.K! This is gonna be the best DP yet! With the 4 way DJ battle as well, i honestly don't know of a word that i can use to sum this all up...
Coming out of the back of Dead Kids (if it wasn't for them DARK PARTY would of been called something shit like indiependent...) bringing their own style of synth afrobeat arabic style
4 way DJ battle
loads of people have asked me to explain this, its simple;
4 DJs 1 Deck / Channel each 1 Song each at a time, so DJ 1 plays a song, then DJ 2, then DJ 3, and so on and back
Been in love with A Place To Bury Strangers for a long time, and have been lucky enough to play live with them, this is from the new EP out soon, sounds amazing!
Howler bring to the indie pop table, that gittery jump but ever so catchy surf vibe, really into this
Sunday, 20 November 2011
White Denim were one of those bands i've always liked, but never really been that into. Loved the first album, then they kinda went off the boil for me. This year i've been lucky enough to catch them live 3 times, and they're awesome live! This is my fave track off the new album, too good
2 of my fave's to come out of the house/electro scene this year have to be Tyson and The Magician, so you can image how happy i was when i saw this! Such a great version of yet again another amazing single from the unappreciated Tyson
It's always a bonus having Rough Trade West round the corner from work, especially now they are doing regular instore performances. Anyone who has been there will know how intimate the environment is, and to see someone perform in there is quite unique.
I saw Tom The Lion there on Monday, and it was great. His debut album is their "Album Of The Month" and is worth the £10 for it's ornate packaging alone.
Always wanting to see the "local" scene going forward, its awesome to see Gun Crime really coming into their own. Saw these guys a few years ago, an was really into them, the new EP which is free to download from HERE until Friday, is fucking awesome! Real edgy, aggy and a few power riffs in there too. You need Gun Crime in your life
This is the new video for CITIZENS! The band that are playing DARK PARTY Luton next Saturday (5th Nov), they're currently on tour with The Rapture.... As you can imagine we're supper pumped about this!
Ever since being confirmed to DJ a show with Theme Park i've had my on them, and on the strength of how good "A Mountain We Love" i was excited to here this new little gem, Milk, its below, enjoy
Been in love with these guys ever since i saw them at GeorgeII in Luton, The Computers are a straight up punk rock band, probably one of the best straight up punk rock bands out there! This was the b side to their last single. I love this song, and its pretty much one of the best version you'll find of it!
He's was local enough to call local once, now we just call him Picture House. If you LIKE him on Facebook at the moment HERE, you can get hold of the new single "Strange Love" for free! Its well worth it!
Been keeping tabs on Zulu Winter, hoping they'd turn into something special... and that they are! Here's a new track called Lets Move Back To Front, its ace
Connan Mockasin has come out of no where for me, this eerie squeezy voiced guy is releasing Faking Jazz Together, taken from the album "Please Turn Me Into The Snat". The first listen, i wasn't into it, but then it just clicked, and i can't stop
The sound quility isn't great but you get the jist
I'm not gonna jump on the band wagon, but the remix of Blue Jeans by Penguin Prison is awesome, give the track a real noir feel to it. Again can't find it on the interweb anywhere and i'm not gonna be that guy. Just buy it when it comes out as a Bside. Think 120 80s synth pop noir greatness and that where this track lives
Suuns, are by far one of my favorite bands of this year, "Arena" has to be one of my all time songs to play out as well. They return with this 12" Bambi / Red Song, and its awesome, Just what you expect. Off centre, driven and dark. I know its early but the next album i can see great things
I haven't been this excited about an album since.... the last Future Islands album! This is gonna be an emotional dream, delivered in a style that only FI can do. Balance is the single taken from the new album released on 11th October
One of my favorite bands of the last few years, its great to see Django Django getting the attention they deserve! Having been touring with Metronomy has helped their profile alot!
The new single Waveforms is jus simply stunning, enjoy
Yelawolf was on my ones to watch at SXSW, and i didn't get round to seeing him, how gutted am i now!? This track you really don't feel unless you hear it in a club (no shit pun intended), the bass and production on this track is nuts is all i'm saying, and youtube doesnt do it justice
Nicolas AM put this band on my lap about 2 years ago i reckon? He even used to play their stuff out... As usual i ignored it, it was only OK. The new stuff that seems to be coming out sounds great! Has a slightly dated sound, but still new. I know that doesnt make much sense, but when do i ever. I really like this single
S.C.U.M are one of those bands i really didn't know which way they'd go. But i really like they've gone down that 80s goth route. Check out the new single Whitechapel
Really didn't know what to expect from the bassist of The Mystery Jets, but this is decent. It'll be interesting to see where he goes from here and how the album sounds
I've been waiting to fall back in love with Los Camp, and now i can! This single is stunning, such a great return! The video is pretty fun too! Can't wait to hear the album in full!
one of the most important / hardworking indie labels in the UK Big Scary Monsters always delivery! Here's the link to the FREE download comp they've just put out, its pretty decent!
This has one of those key board riffs that will stick in your head and never leave! Massive HH fan, can't wait to get my hands on this record when it comes out!
If it wasn't for a accidental bumping into someone i would of been so slow off the mark with these guys! Massive fan of Gardens & Villa, as you may remember we posted a while ago on here about them (CLICK HERE). And the love just gets stronger! With another great single, for FREE to download (below) and an awesome video to boot

Everyone now knows about the death of DJ Mehdi, but his partner in crime in Carte Blance, Riton, has just posted a set of really moving images on his blog documenting their last weekend together. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and pretend he was my favourite DJ of all time, because he wasn't. But he was a fantastic DJ, a charismatic performer, and someone who did it all a bit different in the French Electro days.
One of my peronal favourite bands of recent times, Surfer Blood are set to release a new EP at the end of next month. Above is a video of them performing a live version of one of the new tracks "I'm not ready."
This was a real stand-out track for me when I last saw them in Berlin. I've had it on repeat for most of today, so thought I'd post it up in an attempt to get it out of my head. It hasn't worked.
Someone put me onto Pure X via "if you like John Maus, and that surf noise garage sound you'll love this". And they were right, check out more bits on the soundcloud, great melancholy stuff
When i got the new SebastiAn track in my inbox the other day, i got excited, esp when i noticed it was only less than 3 minutes long! I'm into the new aggressive edgy sound, sounds abit computer crashy. I'm sure the kids will love the Nero mix of it too
At first i wasn't to sure, but then the more i listen to the new Fake Blood EP the more i do enjoy it, its Fake Blood, you know what you're gonna get! DEEP RED EP Teaser by Fake Blood
Theme Park have been pushed under my noise a fair few times, and every time i forget to check them out, and as you may or may not know, i'm an idiot.... Check out A Mountain We Love below, buy it, embrace it! I'm DJing at The Green Door Store, and i think they're playing at it too... Friday 28th October, more info to follow
CITIZENS! are a new band based out of London, had an uncredited track on a Kitsune comp. Got a good feeling about these guys! Here are some of their tracks enjoy
Really late on Laural Collective, the single Sunshine Buddy (below) is amazing, nice tempo to it, with a great build too, edgey but still tweey at the same time. Defo ones to watch
Keep your eyes and ears open.... 1st October, Luton
Tuesday, 30 August 2011
Cymbals are one of those bands i've been meaning to check out for ages, and only the other day got round to doing it... What an idiot for sitting on this angular new wave gem! Steady drums, jerky guitars and bad timed keys make this album something great, you really need it in your life
Craft Spells have just put out this near perfect record, with a lovely swirling 80s sound to it. Every song as catchy as fuck, and sticks in your head. They're playing in the UK in October, their London date is, 11th at The Lexington
Sleeping Bag are hopefully not one of those bands that slip unnoticed, this new album is great, for fans of that melon collie plod along US indie vibe, such a great album with so many gems on it, can't stop listening to it
I don't know who reads this or how familiar you are with John Maus, but i have no idea how i let the new album slip through the radar! This guy is a mess, in a great way! I really didn't know where he was going to go after the last album, but this is perfect, such a great progression for old fans, but so much easy to get into for new fans! You have to check out "We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves".
DARK PARTY is originally a Saturday club night in Luton, playing whatevers fun to dance too /new indie/electo/alt/dub
we came out of the ass end of ssshhhh!!!who, in its short life managed to pull off parties in office blocks, and disused hair dressers. putting on Tiger Force, CockNBullKidand T3ETH
